Oktoberfest at Wamboin

The members of the Lake George Day VIEW Club, along with their guests, enjoyed a beautiful spring day dining el-fresco in the delightful garden at the home of Patrick and June Blades on Tuesday 19^th October. The ladies were very warmly welcomed as they gathered for their monthly luncheon meeting, featuring an Oktoberfest theme.Patrick donned his apron and barbequed the most delicious Traditional German fare, such as a variety of Wurst, Pork Belly with Porter Beer and BBQ Chicken, for those not so adventurous. The delicious meat was accompanied with an equally delicious variety of Traditional German styled salads and to follow on from that, not to be out done, were the desserts of Apfelstrudel (Apple Strudel), Blackforest Cake and Fresh Fruit.Complimenting the meal was Patricks very own home brew (which they claim is the best in Wamboin) and some of Junes Pinot Noir wine, which was also given the ladies tick of approval.During the course of the meeting, Blending in with the theme for the day was a pretty apron competition. Several of the ladies wore their favourites and paraded them proudly, and even though they were all lovely, the winner on the day was Marie Alaimo with her beautiful black and white apron which matched her whole outfit, even down to her beautiful German styled hat. Marie received a gift for her efforts.Patrick and June were thanked for their hospitality, the absolutely wonderful meal and opening their home and beautiful garden to the ladies for the day.National Vice President and Lake George Day VIEW club member Fiona Spottiswood, spoke to the members about the various different ways in which individual clubs are able to structure their committees to suit the varying needs of each club. For the smaller clubs, such as Lake George, these new ideas would be quite beneficial as the members would be all working together and sharing the duties more evenly. The clubs election of office bearers for 2011 will be conducted at the November luncheon, on Tuesday 16^th

Canberra, was the location for the recent 2010 VIEW Convention where over 900 women from across Australia gathered to celebrate the 50^th Anniversary year of VIEW. Following a welcome to country by Auntie Agnes Shea, an Elder of the Ngunnawal people, Mary Porter, Member of the ACT Legislative Assembly welcomed the women to Canberra. The Inaugural George Forbes Oration was delivered by Pru Goward MP and reflected George’s vision for women to have a greater voice in the community. Pru, who has strong connections to community, and social justice, as well as the enhancement of women’s issues and the role of women in today’s society, related well to the ideals of VIEW - compassion and social justice for all. There was an introduction by Karen Arthur, a Learning for Life Alumnus who told a moving story of her journey from student in western Sydney to being a solicitor with Mallesons Stephen Jaques. The main highlight was a forum of four high profile women - Ita Buttrose, The Hon. Bronwyn Bishop, Naseema Sparks and Senator Kate Lundy - who examined the role of “women in the past and the future” with specific references to their own experiences, moderated by Virginia Haussegger. The women were delighted with this forum. The following day Noeline Brown, The Ambassador for Ageing, was keynote speaker and told amusing tales about her career on stage and in TV and how to “Live Life Well.” Three members from Lake George Day VIEW Club-President Lydia Teodorowych, Bernie Gteethead and Philida Sturgis-Hoy took part in the debate on “increasing gender equality and presentation of women in leadership roles” this resolution was passed by VIEW members. Gala dinner was a great experience as 900 women from all around Australia chatted, dinned, sang and danced their way through entertainment from Sing Australia and the Stilletos. The “Grand Celebration” titled Our Community, Our Future held in the Great Hall at Parliament House concluded with pipers marching in playing, “Amazing Grace” - a grand finale to a great Convention for lots of Happy VIEW members.

Lake George Sixth Birthday

The Lake George Day VIEW Club celebrated its 6^th Birthday recently, gathering at Shepherds Run Winery on Norton Road, Wamboin. Warmly welcomed was a very large group of visiting VIEW ladies from across the Zone. The theme was Flower Power and many dressed appropriately with flowers in their hair and very colourful co-ordinated fashions. The wonderful entertainment was provided by Dj Gosper and Christo, of the Karisma Kats.

Special guest, Zone Councillor Margaret Gooch was introduced. Margaret wished the club a very Happy Birthday, then spoke about upcoming events, including the very important and significant National Convention. ZC Margaret and Club President Lydia, then cut the birthday cake, which was a series of beautifully decorated and delicious cup cakes taking the shape of a bunch of flowers, made by club Secretary, June Blades. A fabulous lot of raffle and lucky door prizes, very generously donated by the members, were won on the day by members and their guests.

Safer and Healthier than Bleach

This information is something that is very useful. There are many benefits of that little bottle of 3% peroxide you can buy cheaply at the supermarket or chemist. Hydrogen peroxide was invented during WW1 in the 20's and used to help cleanse wounds and hospitals. Here are some uses for Hydrogen Peroxide.

1. Pour one capful and hold in your mouth for10 minutes daily, then spit it out. No more canker sores, and your teeth will be whiter without expensive pastes. Can be used instead of mouthwash.
2. Let your toothbrushes soak in a cup of peroxide to keep them free of germs.
3. Clean your counters and table tops with peroxide to kill germs and leave a fresh smell.Simply put a little on your dishcloth when you wipe the counters.
4. After rinsing off your wooden cutting board, pour peroxide on it to kill salmonella and other bacteria.
5. Spray fungal infection on toes with a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water every night and let dry.
6. Soak any infections or cuts in 3% peroxide for five to ten minutes several times a day.

7. Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water and keep it in the bathroom to disinfect with

8. If you have a terrible toothache and cannot get to a dentist right away, put a capful of 3% peroxide into your mouth and hold it for ten minutes several times a day. The pain will lessen greatly.
9. Put half a bottle of peroxide in your bath to help get rid of boils, fungus, or other skin infections.
10. You can also add a cup of peroxide instead of bleach to a load of whites in your laundry to whiten them. If there is blood on clothing, pour it directly on the soiled spot. Let it sit for a minute,then rub it and rinse with cold water. Repeat if necessary.
11. Use peroxide to clean mirrors. It leaves no smear marks.

Use with common sense and care . Keep away from eyes and children! It is a little brown bottle no home should be without!

On May 28 members Kerry, Helen, Jane, Joanna from the Lake George Day VIEW Club attended the Gala lunch, the theme was jazz and everyone wore purple. The event was accompanied by the Royal Military band which entertained the large group of 150 or so VIEW ladies. The ladies were encouraged to sing along to the music. The National Councilors from each zone gave their reports and Fiona interviewed a learning for life student and her mum which guests found to be very insightful. The young recipient is on her way to university to study medicine as her way of giving back to the community that supported her through out her difficult years.

May meeting

When I look at our Club I see we go from strength to strength. We had our May meeting at Brenda's place on the mount of Fairies from whence you can see the windmills spinning as the air stirs. A beautiful meal was prepared by Brenda and the vast array of sweets from Jane, Joanna, Jean, Judy, Lina, Dianne and Mary would turn any sweet lovers head. Sue brought along some of her wine to share.
The meeting covered many important issues that the club members need to know about. National Councillor Jean was a most welcome and informative guest and a new guest Sue attended her first meeting.
The Raffle was drawn and the two hampers were won by one of our members Bernie and the other by a local Tracy from Braidwood.
In the spirit of the day several members spouted ditties, accents included, and Brenda performed a 'magic' trick for us.
We all left Brenda's place at a late hour but with smiles on our faces feeling rejuvenated as a VIEW Club!

Bungendore Harvest Festival

The Lake George Day View Club and the Bungendore Evening VIEW Club had a combined stall at the Rotary Harvest Festival in Bungendore. The weather was perfect for the day and the number of people coming in to join the activities was high and the atmosphere enthusiastic.
Between the two clubs we raised around $200 to donate to the Smith Family Learning for Life program.The intrepid travelers otherwise known as the VIEW Club ladies were the first people to go up in the balloon for a tethered float in the sky, provided by the local RAAF.

We tasted wine and produce, bought local jewellery, listened to performances and ran our children's lolly guessing competition and coin tossing game along side of selling Judy's plants, Mary's boysenberry jam, Pauline's produce, Sue's trading table items and pet rocks from BEVC.

By special request The Queanbeyan Bag Pipe Band came and played "Scotland the Brave" for our ladies. What a wonderful treat!

Happy Mother's Day to all our members and friends and all mothers for this coming Sunday, and if you would like to make a little something for yourself or at a loss for a gift for your mum, then here's something that's both edible and you can keep aswell.

5 MINUTE CAKE in a CUP:

* Mix 4 tbsp flour with 4 tbsp sugar & 2 tbsp cocoa
* Mix in 1 egg
* Mix in 3 tbsp milk & 3 tbsp oil
* Add in 3 tbsp chocolate chips (optional) & a small splash of vanilla extract or orange essence or rum essence or what ever your heart desires
* Mix well
* Microwave on high for 3 mins.
* Cool slightly & eat!

Resolution for Convention from LGDVC

Title of resolution:

"Increasing gender equality and representation of women in leadership roles."

Wording of resolution:

VIEW advocates more equitable representation of women in leadership positions, and calls for the Commonwealth government to:

a. establish legislation requiring that, within two years, 50% of the membership of all Boards and advisory bodies should be women; and

b. to analyse and report every two years on the representation of women in leadership roles.

Rationale:

Women are under-represented in leadership and decision making roles in Australia. Statistics from the Equal Opportunity in the Workplace Agency (EOWA) reveal a worsening downward trend from 2006. The number of women in all ASX200 leadership and senior management positions has declined from 2006 to 2009. Women make up half of the workforce and 60% of Australian university graduates are women. There is vast scope for improvement.Sex Discrimination Commissioner, Elizabeth Broderick recently said “the importance of gender equality in senior business decision-making should not be undervalued. Everyday, boards and corporate decision makers are influencing our lives – from the decisions that are made about the products we consume,to how we care for our families and what services we can access --- so it is imperative that this sort of decision making has equal representation from both genders”.

Outline of the issue:

The reporting requirements of EOWA have delivered some benefits to working women, but inequality and under-representation still exists and the situation is deteriorating. Women on Boards has called for ASX200 companies to achieve a minimum of 25% female directors by 2012, or it would advocate the introduction of mandatory quotas. Women on Boards released the “Boardroom Diversity Index” in March 2010 to track key performance indicators on gender diversity in ASX200 companies. Currently, there is no legislation to enforce compliance. Barriers still exist within organizations; some are entrenched in work practices and organisational cultures that impede career progression for women. It is clearly time to re-visit the EOWA legislation and its requirements as proposed by the Minister. Soft options, have failed to deliver change. Without substantial change to legislative requirements for both public and private organisations, the decline of the numbers of women in senior management and leadership positions will accelerate as these bodies argue that nothing further needs to be done. Legislation is required to kick start the change. The implications of quotas or legislation requiring compliance is being debated in the community now to ensure a gender balance in Board composition and it is clear we have reached a point where stricter measures need to be considered to effect real change.

As women we need to work towards and ensure a future where our children’s and grandchildren’s choices and/or ambitions in regard to work and family will not be dictated by their gender; creating a future where men and women are equally represented in all forums of leadership, influence and decision making.

Arguments for:

· This issue supports VIEW’s Vision, Mission, Purpose and Guiding Principles and would provide good traction for profiling the Voice of VIEW in the media.

· This issue is a hot topic on the women’s agenda being pursued by the government funded Women’s Alliances, which VIEW (as a women’s organization) is a member of, or aligned.

Arguments against:

· Resistance to new solutions which challenge the status quo or disrupt the power base.

· Business is about meritocracy not diversity. Legislation or quotas give women an unfair advantage and undermines the principle of merit.

GHOD, no I have not made a spelling mistake, GHOD stands for Government House Open Day. Had you fooled there, didn't I? Well, maybe not.
A great deal of hard work, dedication and perseverance and thanks goes to Fiona, Jean, Margaret, Pat, Gwen and Jenny for all the behind scenes work prior to the event and on the day itself.
A most impressive effort and great result to show for it.
Also from our own Club, LGDVC there was help from Lydia on the PR stand, tea and scone selling by Anne and being a guide inside the GG's House by Pauline.
This was the first event that the new VIEW colours of purple were worn. People approached VIEW ladies for all sorts of information as we were very visible and looked official in our purple sashes.

February AGM meeting

Dear VIEWettes
I would like to extend a very warm welcome to everyone for the new year and look forward to catching up with 'old' VIEW members and those 'new' members that are about to join LGDVC. We have a great year coming up with lots of interesting and fun things happening in our club and in zone AA.
First of all on our list is the first meeting of the year.
This meeting will be held at Logans Cafe, 11.30am for a 12 noon start on Tuesday 16 February 2010.This will be the AGM when reports will be presented and the new committee that was elected at the end of 2009 will be sworn in. RSVP Friday 12 February. As usual we will have a raffle and door prize We will also be renewing memberships for 2010 (bring along an extra $10) and new members can sign up for the first time. I encourage ladies who have not been to a VIEW Club meeting to attend, bring a friend and join the LakeGeorge Day VIEW Club in 2010.
We are a club that caters for all ages of women who would like to meet other women in the area, strike up new friendships, enjoy a meal cooked by somebody else (that alone should be an enticing enough reason to join) and support the Smith Family. Four great reasons to join the Day Club but if you can not come during the day becuase of work or other responsibilities, then the Bungendore Evening club provides the same type of services and meets in the evening instead.You can also join both clubs and attend a day and an evening club for greater social exposure and interaction. If you are interested in taking on a committee role please let me know or if you have any skills that you would like to volunteer without taking on an 'official' committee role but want to help out please email me with what you are interested in helping out with.
No offers will be refused.

Starting 2010 with something special to keep in mind.

You will never look at a cup of coffee the same way again.A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose. Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil; without saying a word.In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, ' Tell me what you see.' 'Carrots, eggs, and coffee,' she replied. Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard boiled egg.Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma. The daughter then asked, 'What does it mean , mother?' Her mother explained that! each of these objects had faced the same adversity: boiling water. Each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.'Which are you?' she asked her daughter. 'When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength? Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff ? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart? Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest do you elevate yourself to another level? How do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human and enough hope to make you happy.The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past; you can't go forward in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches.When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling.Live your life so at the end, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying. Multi tasking women of VIEW

A number of VIEW Club women are members of two clubs and attend both club meetings, such as a day club and then an evening club. This is a great way to make more friends and be aware of what the VIEW Clubs in your area are involved with.
One such person is Sue Maas. She is a member of the Lake George Day VIEW Club and also the Goulburn Evening VIEW Club. Sue also provides another valuable service to the area by writing a monthly column in the Tarago Times about the VIEW Clubs in the area. Of particular interest are her articles in the September and November issues.

Futures Forum

On Saturday 10 October a group of 40 members of VIEW Clubs in AA area met at the scout camp at the Cotter. This was an initiative of our own Fiona Spottiswood area AA national councillor. Marie, Jean and Jenny the zone councillors were present representing their zones and leading the 'Futures' discussion, with Fiona presiding over the structure and presentation of the forum. Special speaker was Heather who came from Melbourne to help provide direction. Clubs present were Bungendore, Woden, Queanbeyan, Crookwell, Goulburn, Gunghalin, Weston, Belconnen, LGDVC was represented by Lydia.
Saturday marked a very special occassion as this was the planning of the direction that VIEW Clubs would be heading in the future. I will be posting this information for our members to acquaint themselves with shortly.
Not only was the weekend aimed at the direction of VIEW Clubs but also making craft items and preserves to sell. The raffle, a lovely hand made quilt was won by Lydia of LGDVC.

Did you know that frogs breathe through their skin as well as their lungs? And did you know that milk is used to neutralize the tannins in white wine? The ladies of the Lake George View Club do, after visiting the Mt Majura Vineyard at their September meeting. Wine-maker Frank van de Loo gave us a wonderful insight into wine-making, its technical intricacies and all the steps that are taken to produce the wine before a mobile bottling plant comes in and bottles the finished product ready for sale. What a lovely, satisfying job – Frank who is ex -CSIRO, is very happy with his wine-making career and it shows!
Emma Keightley was also in her element talking about frogs which are her passion. We learnt about her organization Frogwatch and all the good work it does educating school children and adults about frogs and their habitat. An education officer visits the schools with tadpole kits so the children can watch the tadpoles’ progress (remember the wonder of this? – even as young children we were aware of the fragility of the leg-growing process and had a great respect for that little tadpole while it was turning into a frog).
The organization has over 200 volunteers and there are 29 sites in the ACT – all being monitored. The data thus collected is used for policy making and to see what impact projects would have on certain areas and the effects of drought on the frog population – all good stuff. Afterwards we had a Q&A, and came away with websites and a glove-box guide of frogs in the ACT region. I went home to check out my dam just across the border in Palerang – thinking maybe I will find a Spotted Marsh frog or a Whistling Tree frog.
To complete the ‘frog’ theme – our luncheon was beautifully prepared (by talented Club member June, well done June!) and presented on hand-painted, ceramic platters depicting frogs in their habitat. We dined al fresco, while enjoying some of Frank’s wine.

Spring has sprung with the wonders of nature and a gourmet spread fit for a queen.

For those of us that are tired of being sensible, who wish that for one day, to throw caution to the wind and wear whatever they felt like, to wear colours that clash and want to wear their slippers with that gorgeous maxi dress that they bought and have never worn or wear that mini-skirt again, this day was dedicated to YOU!
The "redhats and purple clothes" May luncheon at the Carrington Inn was a great success! An exclusive number of ladies attended the luncheon to hear Trina from Bonny Doon Skin Food, talking about nourishing the skin with natural ingredients while members and guests wore red hats and purple clothes in honour of staying "out there". Where? Oh, well, waay, out there.

WHEN I AM AN OLD WOMAN I SHALL WEAR PURPLE By Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple with a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves and satin candles, and say we've no money for butter. I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells and run my stick along the public railings and make up for the sobriety of my youth.I shall go out in my slippers in the rain and pick the flowers in other people's gardens and learn to spit.You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat and eat three pounds of sausages at a go or only bread and pickles for a week and hoard pens and pencils and beer nuts and things in boxes. But now we must have clothes that keep us dry and pay our rent and not swear in the street and set a good example for the children. We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now? So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Farewell dinner

Family, friends and VIEW Club members from Lake George Day VIEW Club and Bungendore Evening VIEW Club attended the dinner. A donation was given to Cheryl, Lorraine's daughter to purchase some plants for the garden in rememberance of Lorraine.

It is with deepest sadness that we bid "farewell" to our newly elected President Lorraine Goldsmith who passed away unexpectedly on Sunday March 1 2009.
There are not many women who have been in the VIEW Club for as many years as Lorraine Goldsmith. Lorraine had been a member of the VIEW Club for 40 of the 49 years that the VIEW Clubs have been in existence. She had been a member of a number of VIEW Clubs in Sydney serving on committees and previously serving as as Zone Councillor and National Councillor. She was the newly elected President of the Lake George Day VIEW Club and member of the Bungendore Evening VIEW Club. In 2008 Lorraine was presented with a badge commemorating her 40 years as a member of VIEW.
Lorraine always wore her VIEW Club badges with pride and was a committed and loyal member.
We will miss her smile and helpful demeanor. Her courage in the face of her physical adversity was inspirational to all. We send sincere condolences to her family and friends. God bless you Lorraine. May you rest in peace.

As they talked about life, about marriage, about the responsibilities of life and the obligations of adulthood, the mother clinked the ice cubes in her glass thoughtfully and turned a clear, sober glance upon her daughter. 'Don't forget your Sisters,' she advised, swirling the tea leaves to the bottom of her glass. 'They'll be more important as you get older. No matter how much you love your husband, no matter how much you love the children you may have, you are still going to need Sisters. Remember to go places with them now and then; do things with them.' 'Remember that 'Sisters' means ALL the women... your girlfriends, your daughters, and all your other women relatives too. 'You'll need other women. Women always do.' What a funny piece of advice!' the young woman thought. Haven't I just gotten married? Haven't I just joined the couple-world? I'm now a married woman, for goodness sake! A grownup! Surely my husband and the family we may start will be all I need to make my life worthwhile!' But she listened to her Mother. She kept contact with her Sisters and made more women friends each year. As the years tumbled by, one after another, she gradually came to understand that her Mum really knew what she was talking about. As time and nature work their changes and their mysteries upon a woman, Sisters are the mainstays of her life. After more than 50 years of living in this world, here is what I've learned: THIS SAYS IT ALL:
Time passes. Life happens. Distance separates. Children grow up. Jobs come and go.Love waxes and wanes. Men don't do what they're supposed to do. Hearts break. Parents die. Colleagues forget favors. Careers end. BUT.......... Sisters are there, no matter how much time and how many miles are between you. A girl friend is never farther away than needing her can reach. When you have to walk that lonesome valley and you have to walk it by yourself, the women in your life will be on the valley's rim, cheering you on, praying for you, pulling for you, intervening on your behalf, and waiting with open arms at the valley's end. Sometimes, they will even break the rules and walk beside you...Or come in and carry you out. Girlfriends, daughters, granddaughters, daughters-in-law, sisters, sisters-in-law, Mothers, grandmothers, aunties, nieces, cousins, and extended family, all bless our life! The world wouldn't be the same without women. When we began this adventure called womanhood, we had no idea of the incredible joys or sorrows that lay ahead. Nor did we know how much we would need each other. Every day, we need each other still There are more than twenty angels in this world. Ten are peacefully sleeping on clouds. Nine are playing. And one is reading this message at this moment.

Christmas Luncheon at Logans

Our last meeting for the year was held at Logan's. The room was decorated with Christmas cheer and wonderful home made dinner smells that welcomed everyone as they entered. We had Rhonda from Queanbeyan Evening VIEW Club reciting some naughty ditties before we exchanged our Chris Kringle gifts. The raffle was drawn and winners announced. A most enjoyable Christmas meeting was had by all. We look forward to a successful and industrious 2009 year. Merry Christmas everyone! Remember we start back in February 2009!

November Luncheon Meeting

This month we had Maria Taylor, owner and editor of Palerang's monthly newspaper "Bulletin" as our guest speaker. Maria told the members how she came upon acquiring the Bulletin and her vision for it. Members enjoyed her presentation and had plenty of questions to ask even after the official part of the luncheon, as can be seen in the photo below.

Sandy Sedgwick, our speaker from the volunteer bush fire brigade other wise known as the NSW Rural Fire Service, telling us about the life of a firey. Highlighting the great importance of supporting our local Fire Service because they are the ones who are on call 24/7 to protect life and property. How fortunate we are to have such selfless people to put their lives on the line in our most difficult of times. Hats off to the fireys!

"When I grow up I'm going to be a fireman" says Kerry. "Really?" says Gillian. "That hat suits you" says Lina.

Queanbeyan's 24th Birthday

The ladies of Queanbeyan's VIEW Club celebrated their 24th birthday in style with a "Mad Hatters Tea Party." The VIEW Trap singers performed songs written by one of their members. They sang their way through "I'm a little tea pot" and other songs. As you can see they were dressed as tea bags for their demonstrative performance, wearing their tea cosies (on their heads, no less) and adorning themselves with their favourite tea bags. Well done ladies, and may your club have many happy returns. (which I'm sure it will!)

June's luncheon was held at 'Hunnyz'. Lena was showing Elizabeth how to make the jewelery bookmark. The bookmarks were made of beautiful glass beads. everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The company was great, the handwork was beautiful and the food was excellent. What a terrific meeting!

Some of the items that have been knitted by club members for the Smith Family include scarves, beanies and the cute bananas in pajamas coat hangers. Thankyou ladies! well done!

Thanks TJ and Shassie for looking after us so well at Hunnyz. The food has always been so tasty and the atmosphere great. We wish you well in your forthcoming endeavours.

June luncheon

The Lake George Day VIEW Club was fortunate to have one of
its members, Anne-Maria,pamper members and guests at the
last club meeting. Attendees were treated to hand
and face massages using natural ingredients and thoroughly
enjoyed themselves. The treat was made all the more
special by a small gift for each attending member
from AB&M Bombonierri of Bungendore.

We are currently accepting donations of wool and
knitters to knit items for sale to provide money to
the Smith Family for underprivileged children. Alternately
if you are handy with the sewing machine there are
Calico Library Bags that are in need of sprucing up and
delivering to our Zone Councillor. If you can
help with either of these projects please phone

Our speaker for March was JUNE MCCLUSKEY. You may have seen
her photograph in the Canberra Times on the morning of her
presentation to the Lake George Day VIEW Club in relation
to her topic: The Sinking of HMAS Sydney in 1941.We had a
large and enthusiastic attendance of  members and guests
for June's presentation at Hunnyz in Bungendore. 
June lost a cousin, Bill Menzies, on the Sydney when it
was lost with all hands off the Western Australian Coast
on 19 November, 1941. This was Australia's largest maritime
disaster. At the time the HMAS Sydney sank it was a dreadful
time for Australia, as we already had large numbers of men
engaged in the war in Europe and in the second half of 1941,
it was well known, that Japan was preparing for war. But it
still came as a shock when Pearl Harbour was bombed on 7
December 1941. The HMAS Sydney had been sunk just two and
half weeks earlier, though official confirmation to
Australians was delayed until 30 November.
June belongs to the Friends and Family of the HMAS Sydney
and has provided a lot of information on the topic of the
sinking of the HMAS Sydney through the thoroughness
of her research.
How synchronistic is it to have the Prime Minister
announce that the remains of the HMAS Sydney were found
after 66 years of mystery on the day prior to her
presentation at our Club meeting.

The March speaker is June McCluskey speaking about the HMAS Sydney which was found off the coast of Western Australia yesterday.
From today's Canberra Times:

Rest in peace: Sydney found 'This is a historic day for all Australians and it's a sad day for all Australians. Together they lie, in the blue silence of the Indian Ocean, and together they will remain, undisturbed, in dignity.Yesterday's confirmation of the final resting place of HMAS Sydney and its sailors ends one of Australia's most enduring wartime mysteries.The Finding Sydney Foundation said the ship lay at a depth of 2479m, about 195km west of Steep Point, WA, and 12 nautical miles south-east of the Kormoran. The Government has moved to protect the two wrecks under historic shipwrecks law to ensure they are not disturbed. Both will be classed as war graves. Yesterday's news heals the gaping hole left in the lives of hundreds of Australian families who have been left wondering how and why.For Latham resident June McCluskey, the discovery begins that healing process.Her cousin, Able Seamen Bill Menzies, was 22 years old when he died when the Sydney went down. Finally, she knows where his grave lies. "All those young men can rest in peace," she said yesterday.Neither vessel has yet been filmed, and sightings so far have only used sonar. The next step will be for a remote-controlled undersea vehicle to film the wreckage.Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson suggested yesterday that a memorial service should be conducted over Sydney's wreckage a proposal the Government is considering to mark the 67th anniversary later this year

Raffle update

So far ticket sales have been brisk and we have sold $48 worth at the November luncheon.
Well done ladies!
We will most certainly raise well over $150 for the raffle.
Raffle tickets will be on sale at the December luncheon at the end of which the raffle will be drawn.

The prizes are:

RESULTS

Our wonderful raffle raised in excess of $150 with which to
purchase art items for budding artists involved in the
"Learning for Life" program.

Charity begins at home

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of drought and flooding rains...

We here in Australia, throughout decades have endured
"the drought" which has touched the heart of our
country and our farmers in particular. Who finds it
more difficult than the woman who tries to make ends
meet while helping with the running of a farming
property during times of drought.

Zone AA03 Clubs in Braidwood, Bungendore, Crookwell,
Goulburn, Lake George and Queanbeyan wanted to
show their country sisters they care by helping women
on farms who are doing it hard. Women are the
backbone of many families and put their family
before their own needs. During times of drought
it is the woman of many a rural household who is
struggling to raise the family, clothe, feed and
educate them as well as support their husband and
work long hours on the farm.
Hence through the initiative of Zone Councillor
Fiona Spottiswood and Club Delegates the
"VIEW Drought Project" was created.


During 2007 VIEW Clubs in Zone AA03 were
asked to collect items to donate for Drought Packs
to distribute to country women in our immediate local communities.
Zone Councillor Fiona said "Country VIEW women care about
other country women! VIEW women can bring a little sunshine
and hope into the lives of disadvantaged country women who
are suffering from the long term effects of drought conditions
in our local communities by providing them with much needed
necessity items such as shampoos, toothbrushes, hand cream,
soap, deodorant, first aid kits, sunscreen etc."
Country members of VIEW Club's gathered together in friendship
to enjoy a BBQ on Lake George and to pack thousand's of items
for the Drought Packs.
Zone Councillor Fiona congratulated the VIEW Clubs from
Lake George, Goulburn, Crookwell, Queanbeyan, Braidwood
and Bungendore for their generous donations which
abundantly filled endless boxes for distribution to rural
women in need of a little helping hand.
"VIEW women certainly care and like to share!" Fiona said
as was demonstrated by our VIEW city sisters
from Woden and Belconnen who also added their generous
donations to the Drought Project.

Special Christmas Raffle

Lake George is running a special Christmas Raffle.
The raffle is to provide necessary art items for some "Learning for Life" clients with Robin Segar.
The children who are being encouraged in this instance are very artistic and need suitable items to express their creativity.
There are two packs so far, one consisting of canvases, paintbrushes and another folder, sketch paper and coloured pencils.
These items are not cheap to purchase and creativity is always to be encouraged in our youth.
We are looking at purchasing acrylic paints and perhaps oil paints and more canvases.
We will also accept donations of (new) paintbrushes, paints, canvases or anything else that is suitable to put in the art packs for the kids.

Please be generous with the purchase of your tickets.
Tickets are $1.00 each or a booklet of 10 for $10 (sorry, no discounts this time)

CONVENTION 2007 in Tamworth

A group of ladies from the LGDVC went to Tamworth to celebrate the 'gathering of VIEW clubs' from NSW. This band of adventuerers drove in convoy to the wild west town of Tamworth to have fun with a couple of hundred women and be participants in a a Scottish wedding and a wealth of other fun activities.

LGDVC celebrates it's Third Birthday

Members and guests of LGDVC celebrated a ‘yee haw’ of a Third Birthday at Goolabri Country Resort. The theme of "Blues Country" was echoed in the clothing and accessories of the attendees, with checkered shirts, hats, cow bells and whip being the order of the day.
Zone Councillor, Fiona Spottiswood read a country ditty about the ladies of the LGDV club and Juanita Cucinotta entertained everyone with her wonderful Blues Country songs in front of the roaring fire that provided both warmth and ambience for the entire event.
The celebration culminated in a wonderful birthday cake and raffle prizes galore. A great day was had by all. President Pauline Segeri congratulated the club on it's third birthday and wished all the members many more years of fun packed attendance of the LGDVC. To complete the proceedings we all sang our own LGDVC birthday song (in a round, no less) that was specially written for this occassion by Lydia, the publicity/program officer. We would like to thank all the clubs who supported our fledgeling club by their attendance and birthday wishes. Another record attendance!

LGDVC meets on the THIRD Tuesday of the month. We actively encourage ladies from the Wamboin, Sutton, Bungendore, Braidwood, Bywong, Captains Flat and surrounding areas to join our DAY Club. The next meeting of the Lake George Day VIEW Club will be on Tuesday September 18, 2007 commencing at 11.30am for a 12 noon start at Goolabri Country Resort. Cost is $21. More info to follow.
If you have drought pack items to donate please bring them along as this is the last month we are collecting before handing them over to those who are greatest in need.

Well there are two events that have happened in our club that are news worthy items and as such I will devote a post to them.
These events are listed in chronological order.

First on 2oth July our very own President, Pauline, became a NANA!
Pauline has been over the moon at this joyous event happening in her life.

Congratulations go to Pauline and Stefan for becoming Grandparents.

May baby Elyse Mia bring you great joy and when the joy turns into tears (and smells..) you may return her to her doting parents. (he he he)

The second news item is also wonderful and of epic proportions.

Our very own Fiona Spottiswood has been elected as National Councillor for Area AA03 for '08 and '09. Yes, you heard right, Fiona is in 'the chair'. Lookout VIEW!

Lake George Day VIEW Club president, committee and members would like to Congratulate Fiona on being elected National Councillor. We extend our very best wishes to her and know that she will do an exceptional job (as she normally does) as we would not expect anything different from her. Her enthusiasm and creativity will inspire VIEW into even greater heights.

This special day, Saturday the seventh day of the seventh month of the seventh year of the new century provided ladies from the AAO3 Zone with a chance to attend the Mc2 online Computer and Website Training Course presented by Robin Vargo from Melbourne who is the Online Groups Project Coordinator.
The course was organised by Zone Councillor Fiona at the Smith Family House in Woden and was attended by ladies from Lake George Day VIEW Club, Woden VIEW, Bungendore Evening VIEW Club, Queanbeyan Evening VIEW Club, Belconnen VIEW Club, Crookwell VIEW Club and Goulburn VIEW Club. Our guest Speaker will be Christina Mulligan who will provide a presentation about "SUPERannuation" and the changes to it that will be coming in from JULY 1 this year and how this will affect those who are already on super and those who are not quite there yet, and how best to utilise your super in light of the new changes. This is a wonderful opportunity to find out how to provide the best financial security for yourself. Ladies from LGDVC who attended the VIEW Conference in Goulburn with Zone Councillor, who was all dressed in green

Peter Pan (our infamous young Zone Councillor, Fiona Spottiswood) transformed the Centretown Motel into a magical “Neverland” for the annual VIEW Club Zone Conference. Pirate ships, treasure chests, gold, pirates, Tinkerbell fairies, children’s books and other children’s literary toys swamped the room to welcome members. Scallywag VIEW members dressed as children’s literary characters answered Peter Pan’s call to “Come Fly With Me To Neverland”. Members flocked from Goulburn, Braidwood, Bungendore, Crookwell, Lake George and Queanbeyan to experience a world of “Literacy, Learning and Laughter” and share their Club adventures or tall tales. National Councillor Susan Groenhout outlined VIEW’s visions for the future. VIEW Club is a valued part of The Smith Family and in 2007 their five key focus areas include:
Sponsoring Learning For Life Students> Donating school stationery packs for children> Reading with children to advance literacy>Engaging with children after school at Homework and Computer Clubs> Providing books and toys for children at Christmas.
Peter Pan challenged VIEW friends to a game of dominoes. Scoundrels who played and didn’t learn about The Smith Family’s Learning For Life program during the game, had to walk Captain Hook’s perilous gang-plank ! To unlock opportunities for disadvantaged Australian children and families, The Smith Family also provides programs focusing on reading literacy, financial literacy, computer literacy, student mentoring, and targeted programs suitable for indigenous and migrant families. Our community is very fortunate to have The Smith Family’s Learning For Life Worker Robyn Seagar based at STEC, and she is responsible for approximately 250 Learning For Life Students in Goulburn and surrounding areas.Tinkerbell’s fairies dared Captain Hook’s pirates to a “duel of wits”, debating Resolution issues of national importance. Support was shown by VIEW members for Dr John Holts Radiowave Cancer Therapy to be recognised, introduced into mainstream medicine in

Australia

and to be covered by Medicare for anyone wishing this form of treatment. Other issues included non-cosmetic dental health care funded by Medicare for all Australians, and the negative impact of recent IR laws.

A fantastic escapade in Neverland was enjoyed by all. This was Zone Councillor Fiona’s last Zone Conference and many thanks, cheers and votes of appreciation were given by the members in Zone AA03, as they wished her success in her nomination as Area AA National Councillor… so this may not be the last of Peter Pan or Fiona’s exploits in VIEW-land!Peter Pan left on a high note citing “All you need is faith and trust … and a little bit of pixie dust” before wishing all a safe journey back to the “real world of grownups”!
